Mar Muñiz (Sevilla, 1975) develops a body of work shaped by the visual culture of the 1980s. Her influences stem from a popular imaginary formed by Japanese cartoons, neon lights, Acid House, early video games, advertising, music videos, and board games. This bright and fantastical universe emerges in her work as a reflection of a society increasingly permeated by technology, consumerism, and the transition toward the technological human. Behind the curtain, her works bring the Society of the Spectacle to the surface. The artist observes the reality envisioned by Guy Debord and portrays it through popular icons, objects of desire, and images associated with childhood, constructing scenes that are easy to look at and remember while opening the door to sensibility. Her pieces form a contemporary bestiary of vibrant creatures, symbols, and spaces. Mar Muñiz constructs a visual language in which the playful does not exclude the unsettling. Her images captivate through their chromatic intensity and pop energy, yet they also operate with an ironic ambiguity, oscillating between seduction and reflection.
