GERHARDT BRAUN GALLERY MADRID - Calle Claudio Coello 72, 28001 Madrid
This text has not been written in a programming language. However, we should start with a very clear instruction on how to approach Vera Midões' painting: it is necessary to abolish all prejudices and approach her work with the attitude of a true contemporary observer, that is, of his time.
It's the same as saying that we arrived at the exhibition at "ground zero", the starting point, without any expectations of what we might see. Similarly, when we begin to learn a language, the best way is to speak first —rather than write— by emitting articulated sounds. So let's "babble" about the various elements we see and the references her painting shares with us. First, there is an anthropomorphic hybridity, tangent to a dream in which her world of characters orbits in a spiral effect. In the next story she tells, which does not belong exclusively to Midões' imagination but to collective memory, she engages us with what engages her. Her readings infect her images; the modal side of the music also penetrates them, destroying any obvious connections and creating new interpretations in the artist's mind and ours.
