Rogelio Olmedo is an Aragonese sculptor and painter who trained in Zaragoza, Barcelona, Mexico and Mallorca, where he has lived since 2005. Over the years, he has developed a body of work in which animals such as bulls, rhinoceroses, roosters and donkeys mirror human behaviour. He incorporates humour into his work, playing with unusual imagery such as animals perched on high heels. Through these figures, he creates contemporary fables that engage with symbols found across many cultures. The hare, a symbol of adaptability and vitality, has become a particularly important figure in his recent pieces. Some of his most notable installations were the large sculptures that crossed the Church of Santa Inés in Cologne, Germany, and the Església Nova in Son Servera, Mallorca. In this new exhibition, he expands his animal universe and gives it a more intimate focus. He invites viewers to shed their masks, “step off the heels” and reconnect with simplicity. The exhibition features new bronze sculptures, colourful large-format acrylic paintings and ink drawings on paper. The pieces celebrate everyday life and explore feelings such as surprise and curiosity.
